Imperfectly Perfect
The name of this post is “Imperfectly Imperfect” w/ the idea that we are imperfectly riddled with mistakes, misappropriations, sin, character traits both desirable and undesirable, but still loved by God. We have to remind ourselves that our being is not a coincidence. Our genetic make-up is not a coincidence. We were made a specific way for a reason that is beknowing of God. For His ultimate glory. The world trains us to see characteristics that doesn't mesh with the masses as imperfections, but are they really imperfections?
You are Imperfect, yes, but let’s properly identify what that means...
Definition:
Im·per·fect
imˈpərfəkt/
Adjective
GRAMMAR
(of a tense) denoting a past action in progress but not completed at the time in question.
Imperfection derives from a past action in progress.... let’s start there.
The past action is derived from creation.
Genesis 1:26,31 says, “Then God said, ‘Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us’...God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” NLT
Your makeup is not an accident. God specifically chose to make you in His image in the beginning 0f time. Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart...” NIV. God takes great care in his creations...every...single...one...of them. I don’t know about you, but that’s pretty big. You are made in the Image of GOD! Fearfully, wonderfully, an divinely made. God saw all he had made and said it was good. God is good and makes no bad thing. Nor does He make mistakes. You are not a mistake. You are not a faulty creation nor a dented can. God specifically made you the way you are for a reason and a specific purpose.
Let’s continue…
David describes our creation in Psalm 139:13-16 saying, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be...”
Let’s break that down..
You created my inmost being...
The Lord created your inmost being. He knows your thoughts. He understands the way your mind works. He knows your process of thought. How you store information. How emotional you maybe. How sensitive you are. How much love and attention you need. What grinds your gears. What makes you happy, etc.
David confirmed in Psalms 139: 1-6 saying, “O Lord, you have searched for me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all of my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord” (NIV).
You knit me together in my mother’s womb…
He not only knows the very core of you. He created and carefully knitted the core of you together. He knows your frame. The very things that make you you. Your frame: your shape, your height, weight, eye color, size of your nose, your hair texture, the tone of your skin, your passion, your interest, your strengths, your weaknesses your patience, your willingness to serve, your talents, your gifts, your level of understanding, your process of understanding, your level of emotional stability, your level of fortitude, your capacity to love, your passions, desires, etc. God carefully and thoughtfully crafted you to perfection. Your genetic makeup is not a coincidence, happenstance, nor by accident. Isaiah 43:7 states, “everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made” (NIV).
My frame was not hidden from you…You saw my unformed body...
Nothing is hidden from Him. The Lord not only knows your strengths and weaknesses, but He hand-picked your strengths and weaknesses. He knows holds you together. Where exactly you are weak. Nothing about you is a surprise to Him. The Lord is well aware of your imperfections and shortcomings. So Lord you know I have an attitude problem!? You gave me an attitude problem? LOL I don’t know about that; however, He saw the potential for it clear as day and still said, “this is good.” So you shouldn’t feel embarrassed by your shortcomings and imperfections. God still loves you anyway. Take off the pressure off yourself to be perfect. Perfection is something that cannot be achieved by you alone.
{Quote: God does not call us to be perfect people. He has called us to have a pure heart towards Him, everything else will follow.]
Now let’s look at the last half of the definition.
...in progress, but completed at the time in question.
You are unfinished. Hence, Imperfect. We will remain “in progress” until we submit all of ourselves to the Lord. It is at that point when God meets us where we are and perfects us into a Perfected version of ourselves. Psalms 103; 13-18 says, “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children--with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts” (NIV). The Apostle Paul also describes this process in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 saying, “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me...For when I am weak, then I am strong” (NIV). Therefore, that attitude may not have been God ordained, but as you submit to the Lord He will replace outburst of impatience with fruits of the spirit. He will even sift, push, and mold you to the point where the things that once bothered you will no longer affect you.
Unfortunately, we will never reach a level of completed perfection...not while on earth at least. Romans 2:23-24 states, “all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption of that came by Christ Jesus.”
We will always remain Imperfectly Perfect because there is sooo much to learn, grow, and build through Christ Jesus, but the awesome part is knowing that you are not alone, you were made and are here on purpose for a purpose, and have a God that loves you more than you could ever imagine.
I, for one, am proud to be Imperfectly Perfect because that means I am obedient to the Lord and He is working on me. I am submitted and He is completing the work in me that He started before my creation. Let God Perfect you. Let Him complete His work in you. You are Imperfect, yes, but submit to Him and become Imperfectly Perfected through Him.
